Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari vans are cheap used size that is reliable and about 18 mpg with a V6 4.3-liter, including two in which the unit had been off and satisfied with the space, power and 5,800 pounds towing capacity. Chevrolet Express vans are Duratech with a V6, V8 and diesel. The Express is a very large van and do what you are looking for. Are widely available and reliable.

Depending on the weight of the load, I suggest a Ford E-equipped 350 with a V8 engine of 7.3 STI, until model year 2003. Stay away from 2004-equipped models with the 6.0-liter. Depends on the money you're willing to spend.

My father is about 8 Chevrolet vans. They were what they are on the road all day, 5 days per week high. It took Chevy / GM in the last 25 years, long replaced. They rarely have problems with them. I do not think that Chevrolet diesel engines, but if you are looking for used vehicles, which may get lucky enough to one.
